Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory within months. But, that initial silverware is still his sole major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated in response to a query about his future past 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the next few months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the landmark with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal played just after his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

With second-placed Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises despite Arteta managing a squad that has been plagued by in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.

He is under a contract with a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver sooner rather than later.

The Manager's Mandate

Arteta elaborated, stressing the daily requirement to prove his worth. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The team heads into the Everton match managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is likely to see him miss action for a few weeks.

A Different Club

Even with the injury crisis and the intense pressure, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
