When Swimmers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, views the famous beach as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, along with numerous neighbors, noticed cracking sounds ringing out through the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her apartment, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the avenue, talking to a pair who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that all the others was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and barefoot … He’s running towards something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully maximum effort running.”

An Iconic Image of Courage In the Wake of Chaos

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and medical teams treating dozens of victims.

Collective Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to emerge from the community, with the patrol base next to the site of the violence serving as a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, such as rushing into the water to save people needing help.

Following the tragedy, statements of support were shared. An online statement conveyed gratitude for the individuals who showed that “goodness will always conquer darkness”.

The group of rescuers issued a statement, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are touched by the compassion for our responders,” the group stated. “In time, we will tell our tales in the aim that it supports those affected.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many full-time lifeguards, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the instant the incident commenced through to late that evening.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“The team show altruism every day in keeping our iconic beaches protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we saw on Sunday should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and grapple with the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have witnessed in the face of such hatred.”
